Personality disorders are conditions relating to the way we think about ourselves, others and our place in the world. They affect all elements of our lives and cause us and/or those close to us distress and difficulty in the way we get along in the world.

Personality disorders generally improve as we age, however with treatment, the rate of improvement may be increased for some of these disorders. This can enable people to reach equilibrium and get on with their lives more quickly.

The Regional Personality Disorder Services is a small multidisplinary team. We work with other clinicians, and sometimes clients, with a strong recovery focus. Our service mainly support mental health clinicians via specialist assessment, forming options, treatment planning, supervision and education.

As a regional service we support other DHBs outside the Wairarapa DHB, Hutt Valley DHB and  Capital and Coast DHB in their work with people with personality problems.

Services we provide:

  • specialist assessments
  • treatment options and planning
  • individual and group therapy
  • family education and support
  • mental health Information
  • community support services information.

Who our service is for

People in Wellington, Porrirua, Kāpiti or the Hutt Valley, attending a community mental health team who have a personality disorder or suspects that that they may have problems of this nature.

How to access our service

All referrals to our service are through clinicians who work for the Mental Health, Addiction, and Intellectual Disability Service (MHAIDS).

What you can expect if you use our service

Clinicians who request support from us will be provided with a referral form that helps to identify needs.

We will then arrange a meeting with the treating team to discuss the nature of the difficulties. From this, a plan to support the team in their understanding or treatment of their client will be developed. Part of this plan may be to provide assessment, or select aspects of treatment directly to the client. Our service does not have a role as the lead treating team.
